Karen Woods: Watermarks

January 8 - February 19, 2022
GBGLA is pleased to present Karen Woods: Watermarks, the gallery's third solo exhibition of paintings by the Idaho-based artist. The exhibition features the artist's new representational oil painting and continues through February 19th.
Karen Woods paints a traveler’s view through the window of a moving vehicle rendered in subtly nuanced gestures in oil on canvas or panel. These views from the front seat of a car looking through an often rain-splattered windshield or side window, are always about water: water from above, as a rainstorm, or from below, as a man-made sprinkler system. She is drawn to the interplay of water and light, and how it affects our perception of reality through reflection, distortion, and transformation. READ FULL PRESS RELEASE

Artist Statement
Karen Woods is primarily an oil painter whose subject is a traveler’s view through the window of a moving vehicle. Often, though not always, these views from the front seat show a rain-splattered windshield. The realism in her work stems from a desire to invite the viewer to share the experience. The paintings reclaim the moment, explore its detail, and unearth its emotional content. They are about freezing and compressing time; then elongating and decelerating it. READ MORE |
