ANA MEDINA: GRAND GESTURES (2023 Exhibition)

Ana Medina’s paintings are an homage to the contemporary moment.  In the current era of bottomless digital photo albums and lives lived publicly on social media, a new generation has been made to feel that they have to make every moment iconic - that their life needs to be bigger, better, and more beautiful than everyone else’s and shared online for all to see. 

JANUARY 2025
Ana Medina lost her home and studio and many paintings in the Eaton Fire. Ana’s exquisitely detailed oil paintings depict the world around her - paintings of her family and friends as they go about their daily lives. These paintings are about capturing the joy of the most mundane moments and memorializing them in oil.  Both she and her husband, composer and musician Morgan Whirledge (Chrome Canyon), lost their studios. Ana, Morgan, and their two small children on the journey to rebuild their lives. Ana has continued her support of her community with Ornaments for Altadena, a group organizing donations of holiday ornaments for those who lost their homes.

These two new paintings are even more poignant in their capturing of a simple moment in light of all Ana has been through. She is setting down for eternity the simple gestures in these paintings and simultaneously reminding us of the preciousness of the small things.
