ARTIST STATEMENT
Various bodies of water in an abstracted or reflected state have always been an inspiration for me—from vast oceans and rapid streams to glistening tides. But these states are constantly in flux. The only way to represent them is through memory, which also shifts over time so that what we retain is an impression of an initial feeling.
The paintings in my current exhibition, “Sea Memories,” aim to invoke a range of emotions associated with the sea as a subject: vast, calming, awe inspiring. My process starts with a loose, intuitive composition over which I apply multiple layers of color that are ultimately obscured with a veil of white paint. Then, through a physically intense sanding process, the initial composition reemerges with an almost sculptural depth. From there, I often blend in metallics to give the illusion of a shimmering surface that evokes the play of light on water.
Ultimately, I hope these paintings inspire the viewer to conjure their own sea memories either real or imaginary.
