ARTIST STATEMENT 2024 As I continue to describe the landscapes of Los Angeles I am endlessly impressed by its beauty and both fascinated with and concerned by the weather patterns that shape it. Snow on the San Gabriel Mountains, a green sky and the saturated light of twilight are all familiar but unexpected moments that are worth stopping to appreciate, photograph, and later recreate with paint. As a mother of young children, I feel a growing sense of responsibility to protect the spaces I depict and the people who inhabit them. The paintings are detailed meditations on these subjects.
I use distinct color changes and a deliberate simplification of details to create records of my significant places and display the transformative nature of time. I love how oil paint allows me to mix, manipulate, layer and slowly build up the surface of the painting until the colors align with the memory of the moment I am describing. I photograph my subjects as I discover them, later combining and modifying the references to best describe the feeling of standing where I did. My goal is to evoke the essence of the city through aesthetics that are difficult to communicate with words but are collectively felt by those who live here.
In this group of recent paintings weather and light transform the Los Angeles landscape in surprising and beautiful ways that describe the passing of time.
