ARTIST STATEMENT 2024 I define my paintings as abstract landscapes, which may sound like an oxymoron, and I appreciate that contradiction within my work. There's something profound in the ability of both art and humans to embrace two seemingly contradictory elements. For instance, my layered linear compositions, cascading from atmospheric to subterranean, reflect the complexities of human experience. Through the interplay of vibrant apricot hues and subdued clay tones, my canvases often serve as introspective reminders of the delicate balance between melancholy and joy.
BIOGRAPHY Micah Crandall-Bear's abstract landscape paintings examine the enigmatic dance between light and shadow in the natural world. Linear layers cascade from atmospheric to subterranean, mirroring the complexities of human experience. Panoramic details hint at daily and seasonal shifts in light, evoking a sense of evolution and balance. Through the interplay of vibrant apricot hues and muted clay tones, Micah's canvases are often an introspective reminder of the delicate balance between melancholy and joy.
As a native of Sacramento, California, Crandall-Bear established his artistic roots locally and continues to foster the growth of his community. In the late 1990s, Micah interned at Sacramento's iconic Michael Himovitz Gallery. Mentored by the owner, Chuck Miller, Micah began exploring painting, sculpture, and design. The years of friendship with Chuck propelled Micah's discipline. By 2010, he began his ascent, showing his work with Sacramento's Skinner Howard Gallery, Urban Hive, Sacramento State Union Gallery, and Elliott Fouts Gallery.
Crandall-Bear lives and works in Sacramento. His work is represented in the United States, Asia, and Europe. Permanent collections include the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the Resnick Foundation, the Crocker Art Museum, and more.
He recently completed a large-scale painting at Google's new Googleplex headquarters in Mountain View, CA. His upcoming exhibition is scheduled for October 2024 in Jakarta.
