ARTIST STATEMENT 2024 Finding my subjects is an integral part of my art making process. I love exploring cities and towns looking for signs. Since I exhibit my paintings in Los Angeles, I have been able to explore and discover signs there and elsewhere in Southern California.
The diving girl in Pool Supplies is a rare beauty located in Ladera Heights, just a few miles from the Billis Williams Gallery. The night I found her, she was lit up beautifully, and all the neon letters were glowing. The Orpheum is another Los Angeles gem, located in the Broadway theatre district, it dates back to 1926. The final LA sign in this exhibition is Liquor Deli. This sign has so many elements of Mid-Century design that I love: the red bowtie, blue chevron, and diamonds. It's an extraordinary sign at an ordinary liquor store.
I spend a lot of time searching for signs. I constantly hunt for them. Consequently, many of my paintings chronicle my times and travels. These signs pique memories of times gone by, trips visiting family and friends. During one of these trips, I found Hot Cake House in Portland, Oregon. Oakland Burgers & Pies is from Oakland, California. The “Reno Circus Circus” is based on the massive sign at the Circus Circus casino. I was there years ago, specifically to capture some of the amazing signs; many of which I have made into paintings.
Sadly, many of the signs that I’ve painted have since been destroyed or are in private collections. Sacto Bowl is one of these cases. This amazing sign had a neon bowling pin that “rocked” back and forth as the neon tubes blinked in sequence. West Sacramento passed an ordinance that required signs like this one to be lowered or removed by business owners. The bowling alley remains, but the sign was a victim of a more sanitized time.
